To legally lead trekking, winter walking, or snowshoeing groups in the Alps, you must be qualified as an International Mountain Leader (IML). To attain this award, you require your ML (Mountain Leader) award, substantial trekking experience around the world, and a further three weeks of training and assessment during both the summer and winter in the Alps. The training includes important aspects of mountain trips including avalanche awareness, altitude sickness, the environment, and physiology. The award however does not involve any climbing.
Holders of this award hold a UIMLA (Union of International Mountain Leaders Associations) carnet and that of the affiliate organisation in their own country (e.g. BAIML – British Association of International Mountain Leaders). IML’s are often referred to as Accompagnateurs or or mid-mountain guides in French speaking areas of the Alps.
